On August 11, 2006, under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, the UN Security Council adopted resolution 1701 imposing sanctions on Lebanon, in response to the ongoing escalation of hostilities in Lebanon and Israel due to Hezbollah attack on 12 July 2006 on Israel. The resolution was also adopted in recognition of the commitment of the Lebanese Government to extend its authority over its territory through its legitimate armed forces, so that there would be no weapons without the consent of the Government of Lebanon and no other authority other than the Government of Lebanon.
