Post-graduation work permit extension

May 09, 2023

The Canadian government has announced that foreign nationals with recently expired or expiring post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) will now be able to work in Canada for an additional or extended period of up to 18 months. This move is aimed at helping employers find and retain skilled workers during the current economic recovery and growth phase. The PGWP program provides international graduates with an open work permit that enables them to gain valuable Canadian work experience.

From April 6, 2023, PGWP holders who want to stay longer will have the option to participate in a facilitative process to extend their work permit, which will enable Canada to retain high-skilled talent. Those who were eligible for the 2022 PGWP facilitative measure and those whose PGWP has already expired in 2023 will also be able to apply for an additional 18-month work permit. Even if they are beyond the 90-day restoration period, those with expired work permits can restore their status and receive an interim work authorization while their new work permit application is being processed.

Skilled international graduates are essential in addressing Canada's labour shortage, and those approaching the end of their PGWP are already well-integrated into the country's labour market. The additional work permit will enable eligible applicants to continue contributing to the Canadian economy while gaining valuable work experience and preparing for the opportunity to apply for permanent residency.
